When schools say they look for diversity, is it for statistics or because they truly want it?

competitive schools like Stanford give minority applicants (Black, Hispanic, Native American, Pacific Islander) a boost in admissions for the purposes of "diversity", but is it so they have better looking statistics for race or because the admissions officers actually care about the racial make up?
